The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is the most powerful and influential labor organization in the United States. Under current President James P. Hoffa, the Teamsters are particularly influential in Southern California through the Hispanic Caucus which is the largest and most influential voting block within the current Teamsters' political structure.
In 2009, Ron Herrera, secretary/treasurer of Teamsters Local 396 in Covina, California was awarded the most presigious Cesar Chavez Leadership Award by the powerful Orange County Labor Federation at its 9th Annual Solidarity Leadership Awards Dinner in Irvine, California.
Teamsters Local 396, governed by President Jay Phillips and Secretary/Treasurer Ron Herrera, received the Labor Organizing Award in May 2010 for their organizing efforts and bringing Teamsters organization, dignity and respect to the workers the Republic recycling facility in Irvine, California. After rallies at Republic observed by local law enforcement, the workers of Republic voted overwhelmingly to unionize and gain the dignity and respect that they deserved by becoming members of the Teamsters.
